Dubai: Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman is scheduled to visit the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Monday, in a state visit that underscores the deep and strategic partnership between the two nations. This visit is particularly significant, highlighting the historical and societal bonds shared by the UAE and Oman, along with a mutual commitment to expanding cooperation.
Under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Sultan Haitham, the relationship has flourished, evidenced by regular high-level dialogues and ministerial engagements. The UAE President recently emphasized the enduring brotherhood between the two countries, a sentiment echoed by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, who noted the historical depth of their ties.
Historical interactions have been pivotal, such as the landmark 1968 meeting between Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Sultan Qaboos bin Said, and Sheikh Zayed’s 1991 visit to Oman which led to significant cooperative achievements in various sectors.
In September 2022, President Sheikh Mohamed’s visit to Oman further solidified this relationship, culminating in the signing of 16 agreements and memorandums across multiple domains. These agreements have bolstered both economic and cultural ties, with non-oil trade between the nations reaching AED 48.7 billion in 2022.
The UAE is Oman’s primary trading partner, accounting for over 40 percent of Oman’s total imports. Investment flows are also robust, with the UAE leading in sectors like manufacturing, real estate, and financial services.
Cultural exchanges are thriving, with initiatives to promote arts, literature, and sports. In sports, cooperation extends to organizing training camps, facilitating friendly matches, and supporting the participation of Omani athletes in regional games, like the upcoming Asian Athletics Championships in Dubai.
