Abu Dhabi: The Emirates Arabian Horse Society (EAHS) has announced the champions of the “Mazyoun Al Awsaf award” for the most beautiful names given to local Purebred Arabian Horses born in the UAE in 2024. The winners were revealed at a ceremony held during the 2024 Abu Dhabi International Book Fair at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC).
To promote the Arabic language and encourage owners and breeders to give their horses authentic Arabic names, the EAHS, in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Center, is organizing the “Mazyoun Al Awsaf award,” which recognizes local Arabian horses born in the United Arab Emirates in the colts and fillies categories this year.
Drawing inspiration from the writings and thoughts of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, “Mazyoun Al Awsaf” was chosen to honor his legacy and deep passion for maintaining Arabic culture and language—particularly his passion for Arabian horses.
Along with Mohamed Ahmed Al Harbi, Director-General of the EAHS, Dr. Ali bin Tamim, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Center, presented the first three recipients with their awards.
Owner Mohamed Hamad Khalaf Ali Al Otaiba declared his filly “m. o. Alhus” the first-place winner, earning him a golden shield and an AED50,000 prize. Linguistically, the name describes a sliver of pearl as well as the accelerating speed of a running horse.
The filly “Noud,” whose owner Mohamed Hamad Al Mansoori won a prize of AED 30,000 for second place with a silver shield, is named from a high place that is used to depict a valley.
The third-place bronze shield winner, owner Aalyan Saeed Al Hajeri, with AED20,000, went by the moniker “Nouf,” which translates to “the high hump and the peak of a large mountain.”
The name “Wahaj Al shara,” which means radiant and glowing, struck gold for its owner Mohamed Salem Al Shamsi in the colts category and brought home AED50,000. Hekmat Hussein Al Shareif’s “Bareq Babel,” which means shining sword and is derived from the root word Barq, which means lightning and alludes to speed and light, won second place with AED30,000.
During the second “Mazyoun Al Awsaf award” ceremony, the EAHS and the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre signed an agreement of understanding. Dr. Ali bin Tamim and Mohamed Al Harbi signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which intends to strengthen collaboration between the two parties concerning the award, Arabic language, and legacy.
