Abu Dhabi: The National Aquarium Abu Dhabi has become the first in the region to house African manatees, a rare species found in only a few aquariums worldwide. These two gentle giants will be unveiled to the public starting from the first day of Eid al-Fitr.
The new residents arrived from Seoul, South Korea, with a dedicated team to ensure their safety and well-being throughout the journey. Their habitat at the aquarium replicates their natural African environment, adhering to the highest international standards.
Beyond captivating visitors, the manatees serve as ambassadors for their species, raising awareness about the importance of marine conservation. The aquarium is actively involved in protecting manatees by contributing to the African Aquatic Conservation Fund and supporting educational programs.
“Our commitment to international standards guarantees the manatees’ well-being,” said Paul Robert Hamilton, General Manager of the National Aquarium. “Visitors will have a unique opportunity to connect with these amazing creatures and learn about conservation efforts.”
The National Aquarium collaborates with the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund to support projects protecting manatees in their natural West African habitat. Additionally, the aquarium will sell handmade crafts by African artisans, with a portion of the proceeds used for conservation initiatives.
“This partnership will generate financial support for the critically endangered West African manatees,” said Nicolas Heard, Acting Director-General of the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund.
The aquarium’s research efforts will contribute to understanding and safeguarding manatees in the wild.
“We are thrilled to partner with the National Aquarium to protect marine life,” said Lucy Keith-Diagne, Executive Director of the African Aquatic Conservation Fund.
The National Aquarium offers visitors a chance to connect with the wonders of the ocean while inspiring them to become stewards of the marine environment.
