Dubai: His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, has given the green light for the construction of a new passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport, projected to be the largest globally. With an investment of AED128 billion, the terminal will boost the airport’s capacity to 260 million passengers annually.
The decision was made during Sheikh Mohammed’s visit to the Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects, where he was joined by high-ranking officials including H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, and H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, First Deputy Ruler of Dubai.
Sheikh Mohammed said, “Today, we approved the designs for the new passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport, and commencing construction of the building at a cost of AED128 billion as part of Dubai Aviation Corporation’s strategy.”
The new airport will have:
- Five runways
- Space for 400 airplanes
- Ability to handle 12 million tons of cargo
- Latest technology for a smoother travel experience
The new terminal, part of a larger strategy by Dubai Aviation Corporation, is set to significantly expand the airport’s capabilities. “Al Maktoum International Airport will set a new global benchmark with a capacity of 260 million passengers and will eventually replace all operations from Dubai International Airport,” Sheikh Mohammed stated. The facility will include 400 aircraft gates and five parallel runways, incorporating groundbreaking aviation technologies.
In addition, the development around Dubai South is expected to foster a substantial residential and commercial growth, accommodating a million people and hosting leading companies in logistics and air transport. “This project is a foundation for future generations, ensuring sustainable development for our children and beyond,” Sheikh Mohammed added.
During the visit, Sheikh Mohammed also reviewed the comprehensive master plan for the Airport of the Future, which spans 70 square kilometers. H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Aviation City Corporation, expressed enthusiasm about the development, predicting the initial phase would be operational within ten years, with a 150 million annual passenger capacity.
The design and strategic implementation of the airport emphasize sustainability and aim to minimize environmental impact, aligning with the UAE’s vision. The airport plans to achieve LEED Gold Certification for its sustainable practices.
“The new airport is poised to support Dubai’s aviation sector for the next 40 years,” noted Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed. “It will feature advanced passenger facilities, state-of-the-art aviation support, and a comprehensive transportation hub linking roads, metro, and air services.”
Khalifa Al Zaffin, Executive Chairman of Dubai Aviation City Corporation, outlined the economic significance of the airport, linking it directly to the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33) and noting its role in developing Dubai South since 2007. Suzanne Al Anani, CEO of Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects, highlighted that the project will revolutionize airport concepts, emphasizing innovation, connectivity, and reduced carbon footprint through efficient public transport systems.
