Abu Dhabi: The UAE’s First Vertiport for electric flying taxis (eVTOLs) successfully debuted at DRIFTx, an event showcasing future transportation solutions.
This temporary facility, built to the strictest safety standards, offers a glimpse into Abu Dhabi’s plan to become a global leader in eVTOL technology by 2026.
Future Mobility Collaboration
The project involved Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), and Abu Dhabi Mobility (AD Mobility).
“This collaboration underscores our commitment to innovation and safety in advanced air mobility,” said Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, GCAA Director General. Events like DRIFTx help us develop this sector and bring us closer to a future with smart and sustainable air travel.“
The GCAA’s world-first vertiport regulations, established last year, ensure safe infrastructure for eVTOLs. The temporary vertiport at DRIFTx meets these high standards.
Vertiport Network Planned
AD Mobility, responsible for regulating Abu Dhabi’s air mobility sector, plans to build a network of vertiports across the emirate, including business hubs and tourist areas.
“This network will be a key part of Abu Dhabi’s Smart and Autonomous Vehicle Industry (SAVI) cluster,” said Abdulla Al Marzouqi, AD Mobility Director General. “SAVI provides a supportive environment for companies developing new mobility solutions.”
Economic and Technological Benefits
“The vertiport network marks a significant milestone for transportation innovation,” said Badr Al-Olama, ADIO Director General. “Our partnership with AD Mobility will create infrastructure for smart and autonomous vehicles, shaping a more connected future.”
ADIO is exploring commercial opportunities for developing the network through public-private partnerships, attracting investment, and boosting the local economy.
This project strengthens Abu Dhabi’s position as a hub for advanced mobility solutions, attracting companies like Archer Aviation and Joby Aviation.
About Vertiport
A vertiport, sometimes termed a Heliport, is a landing and take-off spot for electric flying vehicles (eVTOLs) similar to a heliport for helicopters.
These facilities support aircraft operations that can hover, take off, and land vertically, making them suitable for urban environments where space is limited. Vertiports typically include landing pads, maintenance facilities, and sometimes passenger processing areas.
