Dubai: The 28th edition of the Dubai World Cup, hosted at Meydan Racecourse, showcased the UAE’s commitment to global unity and excellence in the equestrian domain. The event, graced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, alongside Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed and Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, celebrated top-tier horse racing and the enduring heritage of equestrian sports within the UAE.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed highlighted the Dubai World Cup’s pivotal role in positioning Dubai as an international sports and equestrian leader since its inception in 1996. The event, featuring 120 horses from 14 countries, including 33 Group 1 champions, underlined Dubai’s influence in the global horse racing scene. It attracted renowned jockeys, trainers, and millions of viewers across 150 countries, thanks to its broadcast by 40 international networks.
The Cup, with a total prize money of $30.5 million, saw Laurel River, representing Juddmonte Farms, claim victory in the main $12 million G1 race. The event was marked by the attendance of significant figures like Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, and Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, among other dignitaries and leading horse owners and trainers.
Sheikh Mohammed commended the collaborative spirit and expertise sharing between regional and global horse racing communities. He lauded the efforts of the Dubai Racing Club and Meydan Racecourse in hosting the prestigious event, which not only enhances Dubai’s status as a premier sporting destination but also fosters a strong bond among horse racing enthusiasts worldwide.
The evening concluded with an impressive sky show featuring laser technology, LED lighting, and around 4,000 drones, aiming to set new Guinness World Records. This celebration of equestrian prowess pays tribute to the UAE’s rich equestrian tradition and the vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who established the Dubai World Cup in 1996 to honor the legacy of racing legends such as Cigar, Dubai Millennium, and Thunder Snow.
