Abu Dhabi: The Department of Municipalities and Transport – Abu Dhabi has launched the Abu Dhabi Dark Sky Policy to protect the night sky and promote sustainability for all of the emirate’s communities. A comprehensive awareness campaign titled “Discover the Beauty of Abu Dhabi’s Sky” will be launched as part of the endeavor to inform locals and visitors about the significance of protecting the night sky.
The program, which is the first of its type in the area, aims to provide a guide for appropriate lighting practices in order to address the growing concern of light pollution. The policy’s diverse approach, which is in line with the international goals of the International Dark Sky Association, includes encouraging sustainable lighting systems, safeguarding wildlife and the environment, advancing public health, astronomy research support, and sustainable development.
HH Dr. Salem Al Kaabi, Director General of Operations Affairs at the Department of Municipalities and Transport, said that, “The Abu Dhabi Dark Sky Policy embodies our commitment to a future where the beauty of the night sky is cherished and protected. Aligned with global environmental initiatives, this policy establishes a comprehensive framework for responsible urban development, fostering awareness and adherence to sustainable lighting practices. By creating a harmonious coexistence between our urban landscape and celestial wonders, we aim to enhance residents’ quality of life and contribute to a global movement aimed at preserving natural beauty.”
The primary parameters of the policy will address both new and existing outdoor lighting equipment, and they will apply to both the public and private sectors, except cultural festivals and events. Because it adds to light and visual pollution, indoor lighting in private spaces, like houses and businesses, will also be examined to determine how far it spills outside.
All pertinent parties must cooperate to satisfy the goals of the Abu Dhabi Dark Sky Policy, as well as any related manuals and the Estidama Pearl Building Rating System. A strategy for mitigating light pollution has been put into place, in addition to educational initiatives meant to inform people about the need to protect Abu Dhabi’s night sky. Those in breach of the policy will be granted a grace period to adjust their lighting accordingly.
Public buildings, streets, parks, beaches, business establishments, open and undeveloped places, industrial and agricultural regions, and more will all be subject to these rules. They consist of motion-activated security lighting, exterior and facade lights, shielded illumination, and a planned nighttime shutdown of non-security lighting.
The Abu Dhabi Dark Sky Policy’s introduction demonstrates DMT’s unwavering dedication to protecting the night sky as a valuable resource for both the environment and shared culture.
