Dubai: The Innovation Center of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has hosted the second cycle of the Cleantech Hackathon, which drew participation from over 160 applicants from 20 institutions globally and 25 nationalities.
The event’s main themes were digital transformation, integrating renewable energy sources, and sustainable energy solutions. Three winners received cash awards after the event, with participants being assessed on their innovative and impactful entries.
“We support the wise leadership’s vision to empower and encourage the youth and provide them with the necessary tools to become the pillars to build a brighter future. This supports the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050 to provide 100 percent of Dubai’s total power production capacity from clean energy sources by 2050,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA.
“We are keen to include the youth in sustainable development and encourage them to develop innovative solutions to combat the effects of climate change. This consolidates the position of the UAE and Dubai as an innovation hub and an incubator for innovators,” Al Tayer added.
“Through the Innovation Centre, DEWA aims to raise awareness on sustainability, hone national capabilities, and enhance business competitiveness in this promising sector,” stated Waleed Bin Salman, Executive Vice President of Business Development and Excellence at DEWA.
The competition, which was divided into three primary tracks, aimed to maximize the efficacy and affordability of clean energy sources, guarantee the stability and dependability of renewable energy, and smoothly incorporate renewable energy into current systems. Through these routes, efficiency is increased, intermittency issues are resolved, and energy storage, distribution, and smart grid technologies are creatively addressed.
