Sharjah: Officials from the Sharjah Civil Defence and Police have confirmed that a fire in a 38-story residential building in Al Nahda on Thursday night has resulted in five fatalities so far. The blaze, which erupted around 10 PM, has also injured 44 people, with 17 of them in critical condition and 27 others sustaining minor injuries.
The Sharjah Police Operations Room received the alert at 10:50 PM, leading to the immediate deployment of emergency teams. Despite quick containment of the fire, smoke inhalation led to five fatalities and numerous cases of suffocation. Major General Saif Al Zari Al Shamsi, Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police, extended condolences to the victims’ families and wished the injured a swift recovery.
To assist those affected, 156 residents, including 18 children, were provided with temporary hotel accommodations in Sharjah. Authorities have reported that the injured are receiving necessary medical treatment, with those critically affected still under medical care and others having been discharged after treatment.
Such continuous incidents not only underscore the dangers of residential fires but also spread a negative perception of the region’s safety. This will motivate the Sharjah Civil Defence to focus attention on heightened safety measures and strict security protocols in high-rise buildings.
