Sharjah: UAE fencers have bagged gold and silver medals in Saber Individuals competitions at the ongoing 7th edition of the Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST 2024).
The best fencers from the Arab world came to Sharjah Women Sports to compete in individual Saber, Épée, and Foil matches, showcasing the remarkable skills of UAE fencers.
Mahra Abdullah, an athlete from the United Arab Emirates, won the gold in the Saber Individuals division by defeating Asila Darwish, a member of her team who placed second. Syrian fencers Mary Aqsm and Haneen Elhamood finished in third place.
20-year-old Mahra Abdullah Malla, from the Fujairah Martial Arts Club, shared that, “This gold medal marks a pivotal milestone in my career. ”
In the Épée Individuals category, Omani Jana Mohamed Al-Sharjya claimed the gold medal after an intense rivalry against Emirati Sheikha Youssef, who settled for silver. Syrian fencers Afrodet Hatem Hatem and Omani Esraa Seif shared third place.
In the meantime, Omani fencers continued their incredible form in the Foil Individuals division, winning the second gold medal. After a fierce battle, UAE’s Hamda Ahmed won silver, while Esraa Seif took home gold. Emirati Kadija Hamdan and Bahraini Somia Khaled share third place.
The 15-year-old Esraa Seif related her personal tale of perseverance and success. She began fencing at the beginning of the sport in her native country, and she now has a sizable collection of medals from both national and international competitions. She made it clear that she had her sights set on the Olympics.
