Sharjah: The Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology (SAASST) of the University of Sharjah (UoS) has opened a photography exhibition titled “Beyond Earth” to feature images from the Apollo mission to the moon in partnership with the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi and its Consulate General in Dubai. The display will be up until March 11th.
Several researchers and administrative staff from SAASST were there, together with Meghan Gregonis, the Consul General of the United States of America in Dubai, and Prof. Youssef Al Haik, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, University of the South.
Thirty images from renowned photographers, including Andy Saunders, one of the world’s leading authorities in NASA digital restoration, were on display. He successfully recovered the vintage film footage from the time of manned space travel. The exhibition also features images taken by environmental photographer James Balog, who documents the effects of climate change.
To educate young people about the importance of agreements and international cooperation in the space sector, SAASST, in partnership with the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi, its Consulate General in Dubai, and Redwire Space Corporation, held a scientific lecture on the creation of the Artemis Accords and the future of space governance on the exhibition’s fringe.
Mike Gold, Chief Growth Officer of Redwire and former Associate Administrator of the Office of International and Interagency Relations at NASA, gave the presentation.
A scientific show at the Sharjah Planetarium and a tour of SAASST’s scientific exhibitions were also part of the event schedule. Additionally, participants participated in hands-on activities where they used the 18cm Refractor telescope to observe the lunar surface under the guidance of the Sharjah Optical Observatory (SOO) team.
