Dubai: Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, has issued orders creating the Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority, advancing industry-wide sustainable practices, protecting biodiversity, and enlarging the emirate’s natural reserves and green areas.
The project intends to strengthen Dubai’s position in the international effort to tackle climate change and lay the groundwork for the green economy to thrive.
Additionally, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid gave orders designating Ahmed Mohammed bin Thani as the organization’s new director general.
Dubai’s Crown Prince and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, emphasized the city’s dedication to being one of the most ecologically resilient cities in the world and serving as a model for sustainable urban development. According to him, the newly created body supports the UAE’ goal of being carbon neutral by 2050.
Dubai aims to lead the world in sustainable urban development by incorporating the principles of economic, social, and environmental sustainability into its growth strategy. The Dubai Ruler emphasized the city’s commitment to balancing quick economic expansion with environmental sustainability and adaptability to new difficulties.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid said that, “Dubai hopes to become a model city for the world with this well-rounded approach, showing how sustainable practices can spur prosperity, improve quality of life, and support international efforts to combat climate change.”
According to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, the newly established authority’s mission is to guarantee the highest standards of sustainable development and biodiversity preservation in order to improve Dubai’s readiness for the future. He continued saying that by 2033, Dubai wants to rank among the top 10 cities in the world in terms of resource and environmental sustainability.
The new organization will carry out strategic initiatives to support Dubai’s natural resource sustainability, maximize the use of regional resources, protect the biodiversity of the emirate, hasten the growth of the green economy, and lessen carbon emissions.
Additionally, the authority will support policymakers in developing planning procedures, development strategies, and strategic performance indicators that will guarantee improved food security, mitigation of climate change, and biodiversity preservation.
