Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Cycling Club has become part of UCI’s Climate Action Charter, which aims to take steps to build a sustainable sport that serves and sustains the environment.
The Abu Dhabi Cycling Club is one of several Middle Eastern and Asian clubs and teams that have signed up for the program, according to UCI.
To continue fighting climate change and its repercussions, the UCI has emphasized how crucial it is to put sustainability programs into place. The group has emphasized that if action is not taken now, future costs to cycling and society could increase. There is a big role for the sport, since the next five years are critical to moving toward a sustainable climate route.
The UCI emphasized that one of its obligations to the cycling community is to address climate change. They emphasized how important it is to lessen cycling’s negative environmental effects and highlight the sport’s advantages for sustainable development. This entails using recyclable resources and minimizing the usage of items that have an impact on the climate. The UCI has pledged to protect the environment and spread knowledge about the value of biodiversity in sports and its preservation.
Al Nekhaira Al Khaili, CEO of the Abu Dhabi Cycling Club, remarked that, “In line with the directives of the leadership to extend the Year of Sustainability for another year, the Abu Dhabi Cycling Club has signed and joined the UCI’s Climate Action Charter, to promote sustainability in cycling. The recent period has witnessed the launch of many environmentally friendly community events and outings focusing on sustainability. The club has also introduced medals made from recyclable materials like wood and encouraged sustainability as a lifestyle choice for all segments of society, leading to greater participation.”
The deal is also consistent with the Bike Abu Dhabi program, which was introduced in November 2021 to advance cycling as a sustainable mode of transportation and guide the emirate’s long-term objective to become a major global hub for the sport.
Significant improvements to the cycling infrastructure are already underway as part of Bike Abu Dhabi, an initiative that aims to encourage the growth of cycling. These include the 109km Abu Dhabi Loop, a segregated cycle path that connects important locations throughout the city, and the expansion of the emirate’s 300km cycling network to more than 1,000km. By improving mobility and promoting sustainable and safe transportation, these initiatives will help people lead healthier lives.
