Dubai: The Dubai Sports Council (DSC), in partnership with the Permanent Committee of Labor Affairs in Dubai and Dubai Police, recently concluded the 4th edition of the Labour Sports Tournament.
The event was themed “Their Happiness is Our Goal,” and was attended by over 35,500 laborers who participated in 11 different sports competitions. These competitions included kabaddi, football, basketball, volleyball, badminton, arm wrestling, yoga, tug of war, cricket, road race, and swimming.
The 4th edition of the tournament had ten positive elements that helped improve its status and role in society. One of these positive elements was the significant increase in the number of participants, with 35,576 participants, including 1,643 females, representing a more than 40 percent increase compared to previous editions. Cricket, football, and basketball were the most popular competitions held during the tournament.
Over 750 teams from 257 companies participated in the various competitions of the 4th edition of the tournament, with two new sports competitions, padel and kabaddi, added to the event.
The competitions were managed by 154 referees and took place in 73 stadiums and pitches across 15 sports locations and 11 labor accommodations. The tournament was hosted by several companies, including Dubai Holding, DUTCO, Dulsco, and Al-Ghurair Food Stuff Manufacturing.
The 4th edition of the tournament received wide coverage by local and global media, with several TV channels telecasting the various competitions of the event to millions of fans worldwide. The DSC organizes the Labour Sports Tournament to provide laborers with a unique opportunity to exercise their favorite sports, spend entertaining time, break the daily routine of work, cement social ties with counterparts in other entities, improve their level of physical fitness, and increase their productivity.
The DSC has launched sports initiatives for laborers since 2010, starting with the “First Labour Sports Festival,” which was attended by thousands of laborers from various ages and nationalities. The sports initiatives have acquired special attention and attained remarkable development since then.
