Dubai: The Dubai Municipality organized a number of events and programs in conjunction with the private sector to celebrate Global Recycling Day.
Global Recycling Day is held on 18th March each year to increase awareness of the harm that plastic causes to the environment. The concept of recycling also becomes more well-known to this day. Individuals organize activities all year long to spread the word about their cause.
Over 500 volunteers from 11 public and private organisations participated in events hosted at Umm Suqeim Beach, Al Mamzar Beach, Al Qudra Lakes, Al Ruwaya Reserve, and Al Qudra Boulevard to commemorate the Day.
One of the day’s highlights was “An Hour with the Cleaning Worker,” a volunteer project centred on environmental sustainability and civic cleanliness in which volunteers joined workers to support waste management initiatives. The program reflects the Municipality’s dedication to social responsibility, environmental protection, and the preservation of the city’s aesthetic environment.
The purpose of the Global Recycling Day celebrations was to draw attention to the significance of waste reduction, reuse, and recycling, as well as the preservation of natural resources for future generations. These actions are all part of government efforts to advance the effectiveness of the circular economy. Also, the events promote 2023’s national Year of Sustainability celebration.
After sorting 1.2 tonnes of general rubbish, the volunteers identified 400 KG of waste for recycling. The program served to recognise the efforts of cleaning staff and increase their pleasure in addition to establishing the values of social responsibility in the participants.
