Abu Dhabi: AGWA (AgriFood Growth & Water Abundance) in Abu Dhabi has announced that Swiss company NUOS, specialists in alternative protein innovation and production, will start operations in Abu Dhabi. NUOS will set up an innovation center and food manufacturing facilities for alternative protein production. Known as the world’s most advanced facility for large-scale alternative protein production, NUOS will lead in innovation, production, and commercialization, serving global markets from Abu Dhabi.
The most sophisticated facility in the world for mass-producing alternative proteins, NUOS is based in Abu Dhabi and creates the industry’s top innovation, production, and commercialization ecosystem for use in international markets.
The aim of NUOS AG’s establishment of an office in Abu Dhabi is to take use of the strategic location and resources of the Emirate in order to accelerate its expansion in the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe. To assist and oversee its key initiatives, NUOS MENA will serve as a central point for innovation, manufacturing, and commercialization.
Additionally, the company’s presence in Abu Dhabi will help the Emirate take advantage of growth prospects in the expanding food and water sector, which is projected to reach AED 77.4 trillion ($21.08 trillion) by 2045.
Breaking the food system’s reliance on animals is essential to achieving net-zero emissions at a time when the world is experiencing a severe climate emergency. The food business is the second-largest contributor to worldwide human-made greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for 34 percent of emissions. Although there are some innovative areas in the field of alternative proteins, their influence is restricted by their small scale and fragmentation.
Badr Al-Olama, Director-General at the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), remarked that, “The development of a world-leading alternative protein production facility in Abu Dhabi marks a significant step forward for both the UAE and the wider region. Once operational, the facility will add scale, diversity and accessibility to our growing food ecosystem, bringing with it real-world benefits that will be immediately felt by consumers.”
“Importantly, this development sends a strong vote of confidence about Abu Dhabi’s intent to be an influential global player in sustainable food solutions, where the Emirate is openly embracing a future for food characterized by innovations that deliver impact,” Al-Olama added.
