Dubai: The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has initiated the second phase of its Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) Improvement and Expansion Project, aiming to cover all main roads in the emirate with advanced technologies.
The project aligns with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, to enhance Dubai’s smart city initiatives.
Expansion Goals:
- Coverage: Increase ITS coverage from 60% to 100% of main roads by 2026.
- Road Network: Extend coverage from 480 km to 710 km.
- Technologies: Implement Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) and other advanced ITS technologies.
Benefits:
- Traffic Management: Improve road network management and traffic flow.
- Incident Response: Enable faster response to incidents.
- Public Information: Provide real-time traffic updates via new Variable Message Signs (VMS) and smart applications.
Project Features:
- Surveillance: Addition of 116 traffic cameras, totaling 311.
- Monitoring: Installation of 100 new incident and vehicle counting devices, bringing the total to 227.
- Communication: Setup of 112 VMS for real-time road condition updates.
- Data Collection: Implementation of 115 travel time and speed measurement devices and 17 weather sensor stations.
- Infrastructure: Construction of 660 km of electric power lines and an 820 km fibre optic network.
Achievements:
- Incident Monitoring: Improved by 63%.
- Response Times: Reduced by 30%.
- Traffic Flow: Enhanced, leading to a 20% reduction in journey times.
Technological Integration: The Dubai Intelligent Traffic Systems Centre at Al Barsha, one of the largest and most advanced globally, manages the emirate’s traffic using AI, big data, IoT, and advanced communication systems. The centre is fully integrated with the traffic lights control system and employs the “iTraffic” control system to ensure smooth traffic flow, incident management, and operational monitoring.
This phase of the project is a significant step towards making Dubai one of the world’s leading cities in intelligent traffic systems, comparable to Singapore and Seoul.
