Abu Dhabi: TRENDS Research and Advisory released the Turkish version of the eighth study in its Economic Trends series, titled “Poverty and the Environment: The Role of Social Protection and Payment for Ecological Services” at a ceremony to open its seventh global research office in Istanbul.
The study, written by economic development consultant Dr. Anthea Dallimore, reveals that poverty is frequently the primary cause of environmental degradation. It claims that people in rural areas who are barely subsistence farmers exhaust natural resources to make ends meet.
The report issues a warning, pointing out that developing nations bear the brunt of climate change’s effects despite having the fewest means to adapt. Furthermore, even in normal times, natural disasters have the power to push people into poverty by destroying the infrastructure required for economic activity as well as assets that are essential to a livelihood.

According to the study, creating social safety programs is a useful way to fight poverty and safeguard the weakest members of society. These methods can be in the form of cash transfers (CTs), public employment programs (PEPs), or payment for environmental services (PES).
The study presents four case studies from different countries that illustrate the close relationship between combating poverty and protecting the environment. It provides practical examples of how to achieve sustainable development by supporting the most vulnerable groups and preserving natural resources.
