Abu Dhabi: Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) in Abu Dhabi has welcomed 45 international STEM students for a month-long undergraduate internship.
The Undergraduate Research Internship Program (UGRIP), a four-week program designed to help top-tier undergraduate students get practical research experience and a core understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI), underwent a rigorous selection procedure for its second edition.
Applications from all over the world, including the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Canada, Australia, Colombia, Vietnam, India, Egypt, the Republic of Korea, and Kazakhstan, were received by the institution.

Leading international universities in computer science, such as IIT Madras, Harvard, Yale, Johns Hopkins, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Vietnam National University HCM City, and Australian National University, are home to many of the promising researchers.
“A core part of MBZUAI’s mission is to identify and nurture the next generation of innovators and leaders in AI, and the 32% growth of UGRIP in just its second year shows the increasing prominence of our university globally and the attractiveness of studying in UAE,” MBZUAI’s Provost, Professor Timothy Baldwin, said.

Based on their interests, academic goals, and professional objectives, the interns of the Undergraduate Research Internship Program were selected from a variety of AI research topics.
The initiatives included creating a prototype metaverse for digital healthcare, applying AI to improve the precision and resilience of models for analyzing newborn cries, and methodically assessing how well big language models generalize to other applications and languages.

In addition, interns had the chance to take part in an informative industry panel discussion regarding the AI sector and job market in the United Arab Emirates, as well as a brain tumor segmentation challenge that employed computer vision algorithms to identify tumors in medical photos.
Through a series of cultural trips organized by the Abu Dhabi Residents Office and the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, the UGRIP interns were able to experience the UAE’s rich history and culture in addition to their research and interactions with the knowledgeable faculty at MBZUAI. These trips took them to locations like Qasr Al Hosn, Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque, and Abrahamic Family House.
