Through multiple interactive touchpoints, participants learned essential QR code safety habits, including verifying links before scanning and identifying potential threats. DESC also launched a digital guide titled ‘QR Code Security Recommendations for Public-Facing Businesses in Dubai’, offering practical instructions to help organizations enhance data protection and maintain customer trust.
The campaign content highlighted key risks associated with fraudulent QR codes, which may be exploited in phishing attacks or malware distribution. DESC emphasized that vigilance and preventive action remain the first line of defense against such cyber threats. The materials also educated users on identifying fake codes through visual inspection, verifying HTTPS links, and avoiding unverified QR sources.

DESC urged individuals and businesses to follow digital best practices when using QR codes, ensuring that linked pages are secure, SSL/TLS-certified, and do not request confidential data. Businesses were encouraged to regularly review the security of digital links and train employees to report suspicious codes via ecrime.ae.
The initiative further advised companies to integrate QR codes within official printed materials such as menus or signage, ensuring authenticity and preventing tampering. DESC reiterated the importance of linking only to trusted websites and displaying business logos or names alongside QR codes to ensure transparency and user confidence.
Through ‘Scan Smart,’ DESC has reaffirmed its mission to enhance cybersecurity awareness and resilience in line with Dubai’s vision for a safe digital environment. By guiding residents, tourists, and organizations alike, the initiative continues to build a culture of responsibility, vigilance, and confidence in the Emirate’s growing smart ecosystem.
