Abu Dhabi: The Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination (ZHO) and the Environment Friends Society (EFS) have partnered to plant 3,000 avicennia trees across various regions in Abu Dhabi. As part of this campaign, 1,000 trees were planted on Al Mirfa City beach in Al Dhafra area. The planting activity involved the participation of 50 students of determination affiliated with ZHO, Al Dhafra Municipality, and several other organizations.
The campaign witnessed the presence of Mr. Nafie Ali Al Hammadi, Executive Director of ZHO Support Services Sector, and Dr. Ibrahim Ali Mohammed, Chairman of EFS Board of Directors. Additionally, Al Mirfa Municipality actively participated in the event.
The campaign is aligned with the Year of Sustainability initiative, following the theme “Today for tomorrow.” It reflects the commitment of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, towards sustainability by planting avicennia trees to reduce carbon emissions. The campaign aims to contribute to climate action and sustainable development goals while promoting the inclusion of people of determination alongside school students and community members in environmental campaigns. It further strengthens their involvement and support for various environmental activities across the state.
The avicennia forests in the UAE, spanning kilometers along the coastline, are vital components of the country’s coastal ecosystems. These forests provide essential and secure habitats for the breeding of various fish species. The avicennia trees hold immense environmental value as they house a diverse range of marine organisms, making them an ecological treasure. Moreover, they serve as natural incubators for shrimp and play a crucial role in protecting beaches from erosion. Additionally, these trees serve as nesting sites for birds, offering them a sheltered environment.
