Dubai: The Cabinet has decided to implement a unified fee structure for charging electric vehicles in the country. Express charging will be charged at 1.20 dirhams per unit, while slow charging will cost 70 fils per unit, excluding taxes.
The exact date for implementing the unified charging fees has not been announced yet. The Cabinet’s decision to standardize EV charging fees was published in the government’s official documents on July 8. Unofficial sources suggest that the fee structure might come into effect next month, although no final announcement has been made.
Currently, most places offer free EV charging, while some locations charge varying rates. This scenario has led the government to standardize fees and bring control over the charging costs. All decisions related to the fees, including any increase, reduction, or modifications, will be handled by the Cabinet.
UAEVI, a government-owned vehicle charging network, plans to establish 100 new charging stations across the country. Additionally, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has announced the opening of 500 fast and super-fast charging stations.
The rise in EV sales has prompted the introduction of new charging stations and a unified fee structure. Last year, 11.3% of vehicles sold were electric cars, up from just 3.7% in 2022.
Despite the new fees, the demand for electric vehicles is expected to remain high, given that the cost of charging an EV is still significantly lower than refueling with petrol, which costs 3 dirhams per liter compared to just 70 fils per unit for electric charging, and 1.20 dirhams for express charging.
