Bangkok: Qais Al Dhalai, Deputy Chairman of the UAE Rugby Federation, has been re-elected as President of Asia Rugby for a second term. This landmark re-election at the Asia Rugby Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Bangkok reaffirms Al Dhalai’s significant role in elevating rugby throughout Asia.
With 17 votes against 11 for challenger Ada Milby, President of the Philippine Rugby Union, Al Dhalai continues to appreciate robust support across the 29 union members of Asia Rugby. The re-election conveys Asia Rugby’s endorsement of Al Dhalai’s vision for rugby development in the region, where he has extended membership, strengthened partnerships, and encouraged participation since his first term.
Al Dhalai’s continued leadership also confirms UAE representation on the global rugby stage as he serves as Asia Rugby’s representative on World Rugby’s Council. Singaporean Terence Khoo was elected Vice-President alongside Al Dhalai.
Reflecting on his re-election, Al Dhalai credited the UAE’s wise leadership for its unwavering support of young Emirati professionals in sports, noting that their backing has enabled UAE talent to assume high-profile roles on international platforms. Al Dhalai’s stewardship has seen Asia Rugby expand its footprint and achieve significant milestones, aligning with his mission since taking office in 2019 to encourage rugby growth at all levels across Asia.
Al Dhalai expressed that, “It is an honor to be re-elected as President of Asia Rugby. Our journey has been rewarding, and I look forward to building on our efforts to advance rugby throughout Asia. My re-election reflects the Council’s confidence in our vision, and we will continue to strengthen the rugby community with world-class competitions and development programs.” Al Dhalai now plans for a campaign to join the World Rugby Executive Board on 14th November in Dublin, where he hopes to advance Asia and the UAE’s presence in global rugby.
