Abu Dhabi: In a groundbreaking development for breast cancer care, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, part of the M42 group, has performed the first-ever robotic mastectomy within the Cleveland Clinic global network.
The innovative procedure introduces a minimally invasive surgical option for breast cancer patients in the UAE, offering reduced recovery time, enhanced precision, and improved quality of life.
A mastectomy, typically a major surgery involving the removal of breast tissue, traditionally requires large incisions on the chest, leading to visible scarring, nerve damage, and longer recovery periods. However, robotic mastectomy utilizes cutting-edge robotic technology, making a small incision under the armpit to remove tissue while preserving surrounding nerves and their function. This allows for the removal of breast tissue and reconstruction in a single, less invasive procedure.

Dr. George Haber, CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, mentioned that, “This procedure marks a significant milestone, not only as the first robotic mastectomy within the Cleveland Clinic network but also in providing our patients with a more precise, minimally invasive option.”
Led by Dr. Ahmad Matalkah, a staff physician at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s Breast Surgery Program, the surgery utilized the Da Vinci single-port robotic system, which allows for less invasiveness and quicker recovery.
Dr. Matalkah emphasized that, “Robotic breast surgery offers numerous advantages, including enhanced precision, minimized scarring, and faster recovery times. This procedure can be offered to selected patients, including those undergoing risk-reducing mastectomies due to genetic mutations.”
The robotic system enhances the surgeon’s vision and control during surgery, reducing the risk of complications such as bleeding and skin damage.
As robotic mastectomy is still a relatively new procedure worldwide, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s team of surgeons underwent extensive training under the guidance of renowned robotic surgeons from global experts.
While the benefits of robotic mastectomy are clear, not all patients are suitable candidates. Eligibility depends on tumor size, location, body size, and overall health.
