Abu Dhabi: The United Arab Emirates condemned Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir’s proposal to build a synagogue within the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East Jerusalem. The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to upholding Jerusalem’s historical and legal status.
Provocative Proposal
The UAE’s response followed Ben-Gvir’s controversial remarks, in which he advocated for the construction of a Jewish synagogue within the Al-Aqsa compound, a site revered by Muslims as the third holiest in Islam. Speaking to Army Radio, Ben-Gvir claimed Jews should have the right to pray at the site, known to Jews as the Temple Mount.
“Arabs can pray wherever they want, so Jews should be able to pray wherever they want,” Ben-Gvir stated, criticizing the current policy that restricts Jewish prayer at the location.
Al-Aqsa’s Protection
In response, the UAE’s MoFA emphasized the importance of protecting Al-Aqsa Mosque and condemned any actions that could escalate tensions. The Ministry also reaffirmed respect for the custodial role of Jordan over Jerusalem’s holy sites, as established by international law.
The UAE expressed full solidarity with Jordan and its efforts to safeguard Jerusalem’s religious and cultural heritage, stressing the need to maintain the authority of the Jerusalem Endowment Administration, which oversees Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Third Temple Movement
Ben-Gvir’s remarks have heightened concerns about a growing movement within Israel advocating for the construction of a “Third Temple” on the Al-Aqsa site. This movement, once fringe, has gained traction, raising alarms among Palestinians and the international community. Parallels have been drawn to the situation in Hebron, where the Ibrahimi Mosque was partitioned, leading to ongoing conflict.
UAE’s Call for Restraint
The UAE’s response underscores the need for restraint and adherence to international norms in dealing with Jerusalem’s complex religious issues. The UAE continues to advocate for peaceful solutions that respect the rights and religious freedoms of all communities, aiming to preserve the delicate balance in Jerusalem, a city of immense historical and religious significance.
As tensions rise, the international community is closely monitoring developments in Jerusalem, with many urging caution and dialogue. The UAE’s stance reflects its commitment to peace, stability, and mutual respect in one of the world’s most significant cities.
