Abu Dhabi: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has condemned a stabbing attack in Solingen, Germany, during a local festival that resulted in three deaths and eight injuries.
In a statement, the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) strongly condemned the attack and reaffirmed the country’s rejection of all forms of violence and terrorism that threaten security and stability. The Ministry also extended its condolences to the government and people of Germany, as well as to the victims’ families, and wished a swift recovery to the injured.
Attack Background
During Solingen City’s 650th anniversary celebrations on Friday, a knife attack led to the deaths of three people and injuries to eight others. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack yesterday, stating that the assailant targeted Christians in retaliation for the treatment of Muslims globally, particularly in Palestine.
The festival, which featured live music and performances, was canceled following the tragedy. After the attack, German police conducted raids on an asylum seekers’ home in Solingen, involving special forces. A 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of knowing about the planned attack but failing to alert authorities, although he was not the attacker.
Police are continuing their search for evidence across North Rhine-Westphalia. Thorsten Fleiss, the chief of operations, acknowledged the challenge of gathering and interpreting the available evidence and witness testimony. Several knives were found, but it remains unconfirmed whether any were used in the attack.
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser visited Solingen, assuring the public of the government’s support. Faeser also proposed tightening weapons laws, reducing the maximum legal blade length allowed in public from 12 centimeters to 6 centimeters.
