Abu Dhabi: The UAE is set to celebrate Emirati Women’s Day tomorrow, a day dedicated to recognizing the outstanding achievements and contributions of Emirati women to the nation’s growth and development.
This year’s theme, “We Share for Tomorrow,” aligns with the vision of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the Mother of the Nation, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union (GWU), President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF). The theme reflects the UAE’s commitment to a collaborative approach in achieving progress, emphasizing the importance of every segment of society in shaping the country’s future.
The UAE has made remarkable strides in gender equality, ranking seventh globally and first in the region on the Gender Inequality Index 2024 issued by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Emirati Women’s Day underscores the nation’s advancements in women’s empowerment and highlights the ongoing efforts to ensure continued progress in this vital area.
In recent years, the UAE has introduced a series of laws and legislative amendments that cover various aspects of women’s lives, including work, protection, political participation, and personal status. These reforms have significantly enhanced the status of women and contributed to the UAE’s global competitiveness.
Notably, two years ago, the UAE launched the Gender Balance Strategy 2022-2026, aiming to establish the UAE as a global model for gender balance. The strategy focuses on four key pillars: economic participation and entrepreneurship, financial inclusion, well-being and quality of life, protection, and global leadership and partnerships. The ultimate goal is to transition from closing gender gaps to positioning the UAE as a leader in exporting best practices in gender balance.
The UAE’s supportive legislative environment and national mechanisms have made it a global leader in protecting women’s rights. Organizations like the General Women’s Union and the UAE Gender Balance Council have been instrumental in empowering women and building their capacities across various sectors.
Emirati Women’s Day is not just a celebration of past achievements but a reaffirmation of the UAE’s dedication to creating a future where gender equality is the norm, and every woman can contribute to the nation’s continued success.
*‘Emirati Women‘ refers to women who are citizens of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). They are native to the UAE and hold Emirati nationality. The term encompasses all women from various emirates within the UAE, including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and others.
