Abu Dhabi: The UAE, a major donor of aid to Sudan and Africa, has allocated 70 percent of its $100 million pledge from April’s International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan and neighboring countries. This funding will support UN agencies and humanitarian groups working to ease the crisis in Sudan.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized in a statement that the funding will go to important UN agencies and partners, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), UN World Food Programme (WFP), UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
The allocation from the UAE is intended to solve the issue and stop the humanitarian situation from getting worse as well as the impending danger of starvation in Sudan. This is a component of an all-encompassing plan that includes offering food and health services, livelihood support, emergency shelter, and women’s protection, among other things.
Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, remarked that, “The aid provided to Sudan and neighboring countries by the UAE reflects the unwavering commitment of the country’s leadership to provide humanitarian and relief support to the brotherly Sudanese people, to address humanitarian challenges and continuously extend assistance and support to Sudan.”
Al Hashimy also emphasized that the UAE will provide aid to El Fasher and other areas in Sudan in cooperation with World Food Program.
The minister further emphasized that since the start of the crisis, the UAE has maintained an air bridge with Sudan and neighboring Chad to support and aid the Sudanese people and lessen the severity of the humanitarian situation in Sudan and its neighboring nations.
Through the use of 148 relief flights, the UAE has also donated $130 million in humanitarian aid as well as 9,500 tons of food and medical supplies. Furthermore, a ship with about 1,000 tonnes of critical relief supplies was sent out.
Additionally, through the World Food Programme, the UAE has sent a plane with 100 tonnes of food supplies to Sudanese refugees in South Sudan and sponsored refugee camps for displaced Sudanese people in Abéché and several other districts of Chad.
