Abu Dhabi: The United Arab Emirates has announced the launch of humanitarian projects in Chad, along with a $10.25 million contribution to the United Nations. This initiative aims to support Sudanese refugee women affected by the ongoing conflict in Sudan, focusing on healthcare, psychosocial support, and other essential aid. In addition, the UAE previously committed $100 million at the Paris Donors Conference in April 2024.
Lana Nusseibeh, UAE Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, visited Chad on 13th September, meeting Sudanese refugees, UN agencies, and Chad officials, including Fatime Aldjineh Garfa and Bachar Ali Souleymane. The delegation inspected aid sites, including the Abéché Field Hospital, built by the UAE to provide medical care for Sudanese refugees.
The UAE’s $10.25 million contribution is allocated to several UN agencies, including $3 million to the World Health Organisation (WHO) for maternal and child health, $2 million to the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) for women’s health and gender-based violence services, and $3 million to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for social cohesion between Sudanese refugee and Chadian women.
Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, said, “Through this additional contribution, the UAE reaffirms its unwavering commitment to supporting those affected by conflict, especially women and children.”
Nusseibeh emphasised, “Our visit and contribution reflect the UAE’s commitment to addressing the needs of women affected by the Sudan crisis. We are here to ensure our aid effectively meets their needs.”
The UAE has provided $230 million in humanitarian aid since the start of the crisis, including 10,000 tonnes of food and medical supplies
