Dubai: Thumbay Healthcare, the UAE’s largest network of academic hospitals, clinics, labs, and pharmacies has hosted the Insurance Meet 2024 in Dubai. The meet accompanies participants from global and regional insurance companies, alongside government regulators from the Dubai Healthcare Authority.
The event functioned as a strategic platform ahead of the UAE’s nationwide mandatory health insurance scheme, set to be executed in January 2025. The conference witnessed the presence of key notables, including H.E. Humaid Mohammad Obaid Al Qutami, Former Minister of Health and Education, Dubai-UAE, and Dr. Thumbay Moideen, Founder President of Thumbay Group. Their participation highlighted the importance of shaping the future of healthcare and insurance in the UAE.
The UAE’s upcoming compulsory health insurance scheme will initially focus on the Northern Emirates, with plans to provide essential coverage for all registered employees in the private sector, as well as domestic workers without current insurance. Employers will be required to offer health insurance when printing or renewing visas, observing a significant step towards a more equitable healthcare system.
One of the key statements at the event was the introduction of a medical coding and billing professionals course by Gulf Medical University (GMU), in partnership with the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). Professor Hossam Hamdy, Chancellor of GMU, highlighted the growing demand for skilled medical coders to address the increasing complexity of healthcare systems. Hamdy stated that, “Medical coding is a vital component of the healthcare system, functioning as the backbone of payment processes. The course will help bridge the skill gap and provide individuals with rewarding careers.”
AI and digital transformation in Insurance
A major focus of the conference was the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in recasting the insurance industry. Akbar Moideen Thumbay, Vice President of Thumbay Healthcare, highlighted how AI is poised to improve risk assessments by analyzing individual health data, enabling personalized scope options and fairer premium rates. Thumbay stated that, “AI is reforming the insurance industry by enabling us to analyze data more effectively, make informed decisions, and improve patient outcomes.”
AI-driven automation is also anticipated to streamline claims processing, reducing wait times and improving transparency. Additionally, AI-powered virtual assistants will provide 24/7 customer support, further improving service quality for policyholders.
Focus on value-based care and women’s health
Another critical topic was the shift toward value-based care, which incentivizes healthcare providers to focus on quality over quantity, thus improving patient happiness. The conference also highlighted the need for comprehensive women’s health services, with mandatory insurance providing access to preventive screenings and complex procedures that can improve health outcomes.
Advancements in specialized care
Discussions also bordered on the importance of improving access to specialized care for chronic conditions such as diabetes and nephrology. Enhanced neonatal care services were also emphasized, ensuring that newborns across the UAE receive essential medical attention from birth.
The Insurance Meet 2024 underscored the transformative changes set to take place within the UAE’s healthcare landscape, with innovations such as AI, value-based care, and enhanced insurance coverage playing pivotal roles in shaping a more sustainable and equitable system for all citizens.
