The United Arab Emirates mourns the passing of Sheikh Tahnoun bin Mohammed Al Nahyan (Sheikh Tahnoon), a central figure in the nation’s formation and a longtime leader across various sectors. Sheikh Tahnoon, who served as the Abu Dhabi Ruler’s Representative in the Al Ain Region, passed away today.
A Lifetime of Service
Sheikh Tahnoun held many influential positions, including Vice Chairman of the Executive Council of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), and Vice Chairman of the Supreme Petroleum Council. His legacy is honored by the major Al Ain – Dubai road, renamed in his honor in 2018.
Brother-in-Law
Sheikh Tahnoun was the brother-in-law of the UAE’s revered Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. He worked closely alongside Sheikh Zayed, gaining invaluable experience integral to the UAE’s unification in 1971.
UAE’s Development
Sheikh Tahnoun’s impact stretched from his early roles as Chairman of the Department of Agriculture and Chairman of Al Ain Municipality to his later appointments to the boards of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. His influence was critical in shaping the UAE we know today.

“In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful… With hearts faithful to God’s decree and destiny, President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan mourns his uncle, H.H. Sheikh Tahnoun bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Ruler’s Representative in Al Ain Region, who passed away today.”
The Presidential Court declared official mourning with flags flown at half-mast for a period of seven days starting from today, Wednesay, corresponding to May 1st.
May God shower the deceased with His vast mercy and dwell him in paradise, and grant the Al Nahyan family patience and solace.”
