Dubai: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that five global and local consortiums, along with a leading company, have advanced to the final stage of the 4th Dubai World Challenge for Self-Driving Transport 2025.
Under the theme “Dubai Autonomous Transport Zone,” the challenge called for participants to develop a model district that seamlessly integrates various transport modes within a single area.
The aim is to provide residents with tailored, high-quality transport options while setting a global benchmark for self-driving transport solutions.
The winners will be revealed during the Dubai World Congress and Challenge for Self-Driving Transport, scheduled for September 2025 at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
Finalists
A global judging panel, chaired by Dr. Steven Shladover, a renowned expert in self-driving transport technologies, shortlisted five consortiums and companies:
- WeRide / Deutsche Bahn Consortium (UAE, Germany, China)
- BrightDrive / eVersum / Shiptec / SeaBubbles Consortium (Switzerland, France, UAE, Austria)
- Orcauboat / PIXMOVING / Heriot-Watt University Dubai Consortium (UAE, China)
- SURAA / Arti Consortium (Austria)
- Zelos (Singapore)
These finalists will undergo field tests at their respective locations, adhering to approved standards and procedures.

RTA’s Vision
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of RTA, highlighted the global importance of the event, describing it as a premier platform for policymakers, developers, and researchers to exchange ideas, showcase innovations, and explore advancements in self-driving transport through discussions and workshops.
Al Tayer noted that submissions for the fourth edition surpassed the target by 170%, showcasing remarkable participation from both local and international entities.
The challenge supports RTA’s objectives by addressing key mobility issues, including enhancing first and last-mile connectivity for passengers, reducing traffic congestion, and increasing the utilization of public transport systems.
This initiative supports Dubai’s D33 Agenda, aiming to position the city among the world’s leading economic hubs and double its economy in the coming years.
Evaluation Criteria
The organizing committee assessed applicants based on specific criteria, including:
- Technical Capability: Expertise in vehicle manufacturing, self-driving technology, adaptability, and driving systems.
- Commercial Viability: Operational relevance, added value, and alignment with Dubai’s needs.
- Operations and Service: Innovative solutions, service delivery capacity, working hours, and integration across smart mobility modes.
This challenge underscores Dubai’s leadership in innovation, fostering public-private collaboration, and advancing research in autonomous transport.
