Dubai: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is constructing 16.5 km of internal roads in Al Awir 1, including 5 km within the Mohammed bin Rashid Housing Establishment project and a 7.5 km road linking Emirates Road to the area.
The project features dual-lane roads, intersections, and roundabouts designed to enhance accessibility, reduce travel time, and boost capacity. RTA has embarked on a series of ambitious infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing road networks across key residential areas to support the city’s urban and demographic growth while prioritizing residents’ well-being and happiness.
A new entrance from Emirates Road and a 4 km lane extending towards Sharjah are expected to increase the road’s capacity by 16 percent, accommodating an additional 2,000 vehicles per hour. The upgrades will double the area’s access capacity, enabling up to 3,000 cars per hour compared to the current 1,500.
His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, emphasized the initiative’s alignment with RTA’s strategy to improve infrastructure, including lighting and rainwater drainage systems, in residential areas. Al Tayer stated that, “The project addresses increasing traffic congestion, improves road safety, and enhances residents’ quality of life.”
RTA is also improving access in Al Warqa by developing direct entry and exit points from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and upgrading Al Warqa 1 Street. Roundabouts are being converted into signalized intersections to ease congestion and reduce travel time by 80 percent, cutting it from 20 minutes to just 3.5 minutes.
Serving over 350,000 residents, the project will increase Al Warqa 1 Street’s capacity by 30 percent and shorten travel distances from 5.7 km to 1.5 km.
Nadd Hessa will benefit from additional entry and exit points connecting Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street. These dual-lane access points will handle up to 6,000 vehicles per hour, serving a population of over 300,000 residents in Nadd Hessa, Al Warsan 4, Hessa Gardens, and Dubai Silicon Oasis.
The upgrades include a signalized intersection at Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street, cutting travel time by 80 percent, from 138 seconds to just 37 seconds. The Wadi Al Safa 3 project presents a direct entrance from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, reducing travel distances by 10 km and travel time from 10 minutes to just 2 minutes.
Spanning 4 km, the project includes internal roads and an upgraded entrance to improve accessibility for residents. RTA recently completed major road upgrades in Al Barsha South, including widening Hessa Street by two lanes over a 1,114-meter stretch at its intersection with Al Barsha South. A third left-turn lane was added to facilitate smoother entry into the area.
The improvements increased road capacity from 6,000 to 9,000 vehicles per hour, reducing wait times at the intersection from four minutes to just one minute. These infrastructure projects reflect RTA’s commitment to creating a sustainable and efficient road network that sustains Dubai’s growth while improving residents’ quality of life.
With reduced travel times, enhanced connectivity, and increased road capacities, the initiatives are set to boost the city’s traffic flow and accessibility significantly.
