Abu Dhabi: The National Center of Meteorology (NCM) in the UAE has been named a new WMO Regional Training Center (RTC) for Asia (Region II) by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
The WMO Executive Council approved the recognition after a thorough evaluation of the programs and facilities provided by NCM in association with Abu Dhabi Polytechnic (ADPoly).
The evaluation emphasized the outstanding caliber of instruction provided for both domestic and foreign short courses, workshops, and conferences. These cutting-edge facilities will act as a focal point for regional cooperation and knowledge of water, climate, and weather science.
Following the announcement, Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous, Director-General of NCM and President of WMO, said that, “This achievement is a testament to the UAE’s commitment to advancing meteorological and hydrological knowledge across the region. It reflects not only the dedication of NCM but also the UAE’s ongoing pursuit of regional cooperation and scientific advancement.”
He added that this center will equip professionals with the essential tools to address critical weather, climate, and water-related challenges.
NCM has exceptional facilities, including a big conference room with state-of-the-art technology, a TV studio, a media center, a laboratory with access to all data and products, classrooms, meeting rooms, a library with WMO publications, and a unique scientific dome.
NCM provides both domestic and foreign short courses and organizes a range of events, including conferences, workshops, and meetings, in partnership with ADPoly.
To provide the UAE with qualified personnel in the field of meteorological services, NCM and ADPoly partnered in 2014 to establish an educational infrastructure.
Because NCM offers practical training opportunities for aspiring meteorologists, climatologists, and hydrologists, it plays a crucial part in students’ education. Students receive the hands-on training they need for their jobs through industry partnerships and NCM’s on-the-job training.
Standards operating procedures (SOP) and on-the-job training (OJT) are among the competency-based short-term training courses that NCM specializes in offering, while the ADPoly Meteorology Department trains exceptional students to offer meteorological services through cutting-edge technology.
In order to meet the needs of the area, a WMO RTC is an organization, or a coordinated set of organizations, that offers training in meteorology, hydrology, and associated disciplines.
