Abu Dhabi: The most awaited Global Aerospace Summit (GAS) 2024 has opened in Abu Dhabi, putting together top leaders from the aerospace, aviation, and defense industries. The 7th edition of the event indulged in high-level discussions on key topics such as sustainability, innovation, and talent development resulting in shaping the future of these sectors globally.
A key opening panel highlighting ‘Developing the Nation’s Defence Industry System,’ featured prominent industry figures, including Dr Mohamed Alahbabi, Senior Advisor & Space Lead at EDGE Group. Dr Alahbabi, alongside other global leaders, emphasized the importance of strategic innovation, smart manufacturing, and international collaboration in empowering the UAE’s defense capabilities.
Dr Alahbabi stressed the UAE’s substantial investments in space and aerospace sectors commenting that, “Space is fundamental to the advancement of science, innovation, and defense. The UAE is pleased with its achievements, and we are committed to continued growth in these areas.”
Salem Humaid Al Marri, Director General of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Center (MBRSC), is implementing a keynote speech celebrating the successes of the UAE National Space Program, which connects with the fifth anniversary of Dr Sultan Al Neyadi’s first space mission.
Al-Marri highlighted the UAE’s dream to become a global leader in space exploration, explaining that, “Through space exploration, we are realizing the UAE’s vision, delivering to national development, and creating high-tech jobs.”
The Global Aerospace Summit also focused on Saudi Arabia’s rapidly evolving aviation sector. Ali Rajab, Executive Vice President of GACA and Board Member of the Saudi Air Connectivity Program explained Saudi Arabia’s air connectivity goals. Panelists including leaders from Riyadh Air and Airbus, discussed the kingdom’s aviation plans that correlate with Vision 2030.
Grainne van den Berg from Airbus noted that, “The Kingdom’s aviation sector is undergoing unparalleled growth, and Airbus is proud to support this transformation with sustainable aircraft innovations.”
Josef Mouris, CEO of Electron Aerospace explained technological disruptions in the aviation industry, particularly the challenges posed by CO2 charges. Mouris predicted that smaller aircraft and retrofitted planes would dominate future markets, designed to meet sustainability and regulatory requirements.
In a separate panel on research and development, Sharief Fahmy, Executive Director at KAMAN, praised the UAE’s conducive ecosystem for innovation and talent development. Fahmy explained that, “The environment here promotes rapid progress, and it’s exciting to see how far we’ve come in a short time.”
Etihad Airways CEO, Antonoaldo Neves, took the stage for a special interview, where he explained Etihad’s commitment to expanding its network and workforce, with a particular focus on developing Emirati talent. Neves affirmed Etihad’s role in shaping Abu Dhabi’s aviation sector saying that, “We are dedicated to fostering long-term careers for Emiratis and maintaining our reputation for exceptional service.”
