Dubai: The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) and Dubai Police are collaborating to host the National Workshop on Developing and Implementing Nuclear Security Systems and Measures for Major Public Events. Organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the workshop is being held in Dubai from May 15th to May 19th, 2023.
The workshop aims to facilitate discussions on planning, developing, and implementing nuclear security systems specifically tailored for major public events. Participants include federal and local government entities from the UAE, as well as international experts who gather to exchange insights and share best practices in this field. Throughout the workshop, case studies from the UAE, the United Kingdom, and Egypt are presented to showcase nuclear security arrangements during global events.
The UAE case studies highlight the country’s nuclear security measures during international events hosted within its borders. Notably, the hosting of COP26 and COP27 by the United Kingdom and Egypt, respectively, serves as valuable examples of stringent nuclear security protocols implemented to detect any unauthorized activities involving radioactive materials.
Colonel Expert Mr. Juma Ahmed Butti Al Falasi, Acting Deputy Director of the General Department of Transport and Rescue in Dubai Police, stated that, “The workshop aims to strengthen the joints efforts made to ensure readiness, enhance community awareness about radiation as well as enable participants to develop a clear understanding about planning and implementing the nuclear security plan in the areas of major events. It also seeks to discuss the responsibilities of various entities involved in organising public events as well as the importance of applying detection and response measures to support security system during events.”
FANR plays a crucial role in regulating the nuclear and radiation sectors in the UAE. Its primary objective is to ensure the safe, secure, and peaceful use of nuclear materials through a robust regulatory framework. FANR issues regulations and regulatory guides, grants licenses for facilities utilizing radioactive materials, and prioritizes the safety of the community and the environment.
The National Workshop on Developing and Implementing Nuclear Security Systems and Measures for Major Public Events serves as a platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration, strengthening the UAE’s commitment to nuclear security and its readiness to host major public events with utmost safety and security measures in place.
