Abu Dhabi: The Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture has sought assistance from the Collaborating Centre for Camel Disease of the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) to investigate a mysterious camel disease affecting Ethiopia and neighbouring East African countries, including Sudan, Somalia, and Kenya.
The request, endorsed by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), aims to address the growing concern over the disease, which threatens local livestock and livelihoods.
A team of experts from ADAFSA’s Collaborating Centre visited Ethiopia in July, working with local specialists to identify the cause of the camel deaths and explore prevention and treatment options. The centre, recognised by WOAH, plays a key role in diagnosing and combating camel diseases globally.
Saeed Al Bahri Salem Al Ameri, Director General of ADAFSA, emphasized the significance of this collaboration: “Our joint efforts with WOAH and East African nations are essential for maintaining animal health and protecting livestock, particularly with the impact on food security.”
The investigation highlights the UAE’s expertise in biosecurity and the global fight against animal diseases.
