Dubai: Emirates has launched on a transformative journey to become the world’s first Autism Certified Airline, setting a new standard for inclusive and accessible air travel. In partnership with the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), the airline is working to ensure customers with autism and sensory sensitivities can experience seamless and personalized services.
The official designation is anticipated to be awarded in the coming months, following the completion of specialized autism and sensory-awareness training for over 30,000 Emirates cabin crew and ground staff. This move reflects Emirates’ broader mission to enhance the travel experience for passengers with autism, their families, and companions.
Air travel can be overwhelming for someone on the autism spectrum due to sensory challenges. A survey by AutismTravel.com revealed that 78 percent of families hesitate to travel, with 94 percent indicating they would travel more often if they had admission to autism-certified services. Emirates’ initiative aligns with Dubai’s ambition to be the world’s most accessible destination, sustaining the city’s Certified Autism Destination (CAD) goals.
In collaboration with IBCCES, Emirates experienced a comprehensive audit that included surveys of over 14,000 individuals with disabilities, flight audits on long- and short-haul routes, and feedback from industry professionals. This rigorous process established new standards to accommodate passengers with autism and sensory sensitivities, covering all aspects of the travel journey—from ground services to in-flight experiences.
To qualify, Emirates committed to ensuring at least 80 percent of its customer-facing staff complete the dedicated training program. This initiative builds on the airline’s existing “Introduction to Autism and Hidden Disabilities” training, which was achieved by 23,000 staff members in 2023.
As part of its commitment, Emirates will raise a series of enhancements throughout 2025 and beyond:
- Sensory guides: Digital aids that help travelers evaluate sensory environments, such as sound levels and lighting, to prepare their journey more effectively.
- Sensory-friendly products: Including fidget toys and other aids designed to reduce stress and enhance focus during flights.
Emirates’ efforts are completed by initiatives from Dubai Airports and the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET). Dubai International Airport (DXB) became the first international airport to achieve Certified Autism Center™ status in December 2023. Together with other stakeholders, Dubai aims to evolve the first Certified Autism Destination in the Eastern Hemisphere, enhancing accessibility across tourism, hospitality, and transportation sectors.
Emirates’ groundbreaking efforts highlight its commitment to making air travel more inclusive for all. By leading the way in available aviation, the airline is reshaping the industry and ensuring that everyone can explore the world with confidence and ease.
