San Francisco: Elon Musk has launched Grokipedia, an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered online encyclopedia dedicated to what he calls ‘truth.’
The initial version, Grokipedia v0.1, went live, allowing users to visit the website and search for articles. The billionaire has been promoting the platform for the past month, criticizing Wikipedia for being ‘ineffective’ and filled with ‘propaganda.’
Unlike Wikipedia, the open-source Grokipedia does not currently allow human users to edit, add context, or include sources. Instead, all content is managed directly by Grok, Musk’s AI chatbot developed under his xAI initiative.
In a post shared on X, Musk announced the launch of the new encyclopedia, describing it as a work in progress and added that, “Version 1.0 will be 10X better, but even at 0.1 it’s better than Wikipedia imo.”

Musk also highlighted that the platform is fully open-source and can be used by anyone at no cost, suggesting that Grokipedia could eventually challenge Wikipedia’s dominance.
Wikipedia, which operates under a similar free-access model, is widely used by third-party websites, apps, and AI systems, including Musk’s own Grok, though he stated that Grok will soon stop referencing Wikipedia entirely.
Currently, Grokipedia presents a minimalist homepage featuring a single large search bar, inviting users to type any topic to access articles. At launch, the site already contained approximately 885,000 articles covering major global topics. However, user interaction is limited; while people cannot edit entries, they can request Grok to modify or update articles.
Despite its promising debut, Grokipedia has faced early criticism. Early reports say that several of the encyclopedia’s entries appear to have been taken directly from Wikipedia. In some cases, the information was rephrased, while in others, it was reportedly copied verbatim. Musk’s platform includes a disclaimer on such pages stating, “The content is adapted from Wikipedia.”

In response, Lauren Dickinson, spokesperson for the Wikimedia Foundation, which operates Wikipedia, commented that, “Wikipedia’s strengths are clear: it has transparent policies, rigorous volunteer oversight, and a strong culture of continuous improvement. This human-created knowledge is what AI companies rely on to generate content; even Grokipedia needs Wikipedia to exist.”
In parallel with this announcement, The reports also noted that X had recently experienced a technical glitch that caused the platform to show fewer posts from accounts users followed, which Musk acknowledged was due to a bug.
Additionally, Musk’s ecosystem of ventures continues to expand, with Starlink planning to build nine gateway Earth stations in India to strengthen its satellite internet service. Musk also hinted that his companies could launch an AI-generated video game before the release of GTA 6, demonstrating the rapid diversification of his AI and technology initiatives.
Through Grokipedia, Musk aims to build a truth-focused, AI-driven knowledge platform that challenges traditional online encyclopedias, while further positioning his AI brand, Grok, as a self-reliant and open-source alternative in the information space.
