Abu Dhabi: The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) and the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) have formalized a strategic research partnership aimed at advancing the UAE’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The collaboration will launch a joint, high-impact research program that aligns with the UAE’s sustainability priorities, translating science into actionable policy and strengthening the nation’s environmental and developmental agenda.
The partnership will fund and support up to 10 collaborative research projects across vital areas, including climate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity conservation, marine ecosystem health, clean water and natural resource management, environmental policy and governance, and the use of digital and nature-based solutions.
These projects will be co-developed and co-led by both institutions under the guidance of a joint oversight committee. This committee will be responsible for defining priorities, selecting project proposals, and monitoring progress to ensure all efforts align with national environmental strategies and EAD’s governance and scientific expertise.

This initiative builds on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by EAD with several UAE universities in March 2023, reinforcing a shared commitment to scientific excellence, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development.
It also serves as a key addition to the Abu Dhabi Environmental Research Network (ADERN), a collaborative platform established by EAD to connect universities, research institutions, and public and private entities. The network fosters knowledge exchange, promotes joint scientific projects, and supports the creation of evidence-based policies addressing pressing environmental challenges.
Her Excellency Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, said that, “This partnership with UAE University reflects our unwavering commitment to advancing evidence-based environmental policy through world-class scientific research.”
“By fostering collaboration between academia and government, we are creating a powerful platform for innovation that will generate new knowledge, empower the next generation of environmental leaders, and deliver tangible impact for our ecosystems, our communities, and our future,” Al Dhaheri added.

Her Excellency further noted that, “Through this initiative, we are prioritizing research that is aligned with national climate and biodiversity strategies, the UAE Consensus from COP28, and the broader SDG agenda.”
“Our experts will work hand in hand with UAEU researchers and especially empower our bright students to be active participants in shaping policy and real-world solutions, helping us shape better responses to climate change, enhance environmental resilience, and secure sustainable natural resource management,” the Secretary General remarked.
Professor Ahmed Alraeesi, Vice Chancellor of the United Arab Emirates University, highlighted that, “This strategic partnership with the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi reflects UAE University’s national commitment to advancing environmental sustainability through research, innovation, and knowledge transfer.”
“Together, we will develop impactful initiatives that address environmental challenges and raise awareness among students and the wider community about the importance of preserving ecosystems and achieving sustainable development,” Alraeesi added.

As part of the program, UAEU students will actively participate in applied research projects under the mentorship of EAD experts, gaining hands-on experience and contributing to national capacity building in environmental sciences.
The outcomes of these research projects will be disseminated through academic publications, policy briefs, seminars, and inputs to national sustainability mechanisms, including the UAE SDG Report and the Voluntary National Review (VNR).
The Letter of Intent, signed by both entities, underscores their shared vision for long-term collaboration that bridges scientific research, environmental policy, and public service.
This joint program represents a major milestone in integrated environmental research, highlighting Abu Dhabi’s leadership in embedding sustainability and scientific innovation at the heart of its development strategy.
