Abu Dhabi: A high-level delegation from the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), the Middle East’s largest environmental regulator, has concluded a productive week-long knowledge exchange tour in the Netherlands.
The visit focused on identifying collaborative opportunities, exploring advanced sustainability practices, and engaging with industry leaders in Amsterdam and The Hague.
The delegation also attended major sustainability events, including the World Summit AI, a premier global platform exploring the equitable and responsible use of artificial intelligence.

Global Sustainability Collaboration
The EAD delegation participated in several sustainability-focused forums and held meetings with government officials, corporate executives, and sustainability officers across various sectors.
Key discussions centered on decarbonization, energy transition, and low-carbon solutions like green hydrogen, as well as challenges surrounding policy-making for hard-to-abate industries.
AI Role in Sustainability
At the World Summit AI, EAD representatives engaged in thought-provoking discussions about the profound impact of AI on society, including ethical considerations, human-centric governance, and the democratization of advanced technologies.
The summit explored AI’s disruptive potential across industries and emphasized its role in government operations and sustainable development.

The delegation held strategic meetings with TNO, an independent research organization in the Netherlands, known for turning scientific innovations into practical solutions. TNO’s cutting-edge technologies in air pollution monitoring and water purification including the removal of microplastics and hazardous chemicals- offered valuable insights that will help align EAD’s efforts with the Abu Dhabi Climate Change Strategy (2023-2027).
The EAD delegation also collaborated with Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, to compare best practices in air and water quality monitoring.
Water Management Innovations
At a session hosted by Deltares, an independent research institute specializing in water and subsurface systems, the EAD team explored advanced water treatment models, wastewater management techniques, and flood control systems.
Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of EAD, highlighted that, “In line with our vision to create a sustainable, safe, and healthy environment in Abu Dhabi, this tour has enabled us to expand the Agency’s expertise and collaboration networks. Learning from global best practices empowers us to further enhance environmental management, ensuring a high quality of life for our residents.”
