Dubai: Dubai RTA has set out plans to introduce all-electric trackless and autonomous trams at eight locations across the emirate.
The high-tech transport strategy was unveiled by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the launch of the Dubai Tram this month.
Sheikh Hamdan posted on X that, “On the occasion of Dubai Tram’s anniversary, we have directed RTA to study the implementation of the ‘Trackless Tram’ project, an autonomous, eco-friendly electric transport system, at eight locations across the emirate.
Sheikh Hamdan also mentioned that. under the leadership of Mattar Al Tayer, RTA has emerged as a global model for sustainable public transport and world-class infrastructure, with a dedicated team pioneering AI-driven solutions and fostering national talent to lead this transformation.
The advanced, self-driving tram operates along virtual tracks, guided by cameras that follow painted lines on dedicated lanes. Running on electric power, it offers an eco-friendly alternative with reduced costs and quicker construction compared to conventional trams.
Each tram, comprising three carriages, accommodates 300 passengers and can reach speeds of up to 70 km/h, with an operational range of 25 to 60 km/h. A single charge powers the tram for up to 100 km.
His Highness also reviewed the achievements of the Dubai Tram, set to celebrate its 10th anniversary on 11 November 2024. Since its inception, the tram has completed 950,000 trips, served 60 million passengers, and seen an 850 percent increase in ridership, all while maintaining a punctuality rate of 99.9 percent.
During the visit to RTA headquarters, His Highness examined the RTA’s transformative urban mobility and infrastructure initiatives. These include the AED16bn ($4.35bn) Main Roads Development Plan for 2024-2027, which will introduce 22 new projects across Dubai’s expanding road network, benefiting over six million residents and supporting Dubai’s comprehensive growth plans.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed further explored additional projects in autonomous transportation and AI-driven traffic management aimed at improving mobility throughout Dubai.
