Dubai: HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE), has presided over the 84th virtual meeting of the Council, attended by HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the DSCE.
The meeting included HE Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi, Secretary General of the Council, and board members such as HE Dawood Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality; HE Abdulla bin Kalban, Managing Director of Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA); HE Saif Humaid Al Falasi, CEO of Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC); Juan-Pablo Freile, General Manager of Dubai Petroleum; and Muna Al Osaimi, Chief Executive Officer of the Strategy and Corporate Governance Sector at the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
During the meeting, the Council reviewed the annual carbon emissions inventory, revealing an impressive 29 percent reduction. This significant decrease underscores the effectiveness of Dubai’s strategic initiatives aimed at achieving a 30 percent reduction in carbon emissions by 2030.
Dubai continues to lead globally in emissions control, driven by various programs and projects implemented by Council entities, including Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), Dubai Municipality, EGA, ENOC Group, Dubai Petroleum, and RTA.
“In alignment with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to transform Dubai into a net-zero economy by 2050, the Council has assessed future carbon emissions alongside relevant stakeholders. This collaborative effort is crucial for identifying the steps needed to mitigate emissions and creating a roadmap to achieve net-zero status by 2050. We are committed to establishing a robust regulatory framework to ensure the success of our ongoing projects and programs over the past decade,” stated Al Tayer.
Al Tayer also highlighted that the ongoing projects in solar energy, water and electricity conservation, green mobility, and operational efficiency in factories have significantly contributed to the annual emission reduction.
Al Muhairbi emphasized that, “Dubai began collecting carbon emissions data in 2013 and has since monitored it against annual reduction targets. We review implementation phases and performance indicators to ensure that our carbon emissions reduction goals are met annually.”
The meeting reinforced Dubai’s commitment to sustainability and its role as a global leader in promoting a green economy.
