Dubai: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has participated in a campaign to clean the beach and plant mangroves at the Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary, organised by the Emirates Marine Environmental Group. The campaign is in conjunction with National Environment Day, observed on February 4 each year, and is held under the theme “Towards a Sustainable Future.”
With the participation of more than 250 employees, the campaign succeeded in removing more than 1,500 kilograms of garbage from the reserve’s beaches, one of the most important nature reserves in Dubai. The participants planted 310 mangroves as well.
In addition, DEWA launched an awareness campaign through its internal channels and its official pages on social media websites to promote awareness among employees and customers about the importance of preserving natural resources. The organisation further held virtual environmental lectures in Arabic and English in cooperation with the Dubai Municipality.
Mr. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, highlighted DEWA’s keenness to support national environmental activities that contribute to achieving a sustainable environment in terms of air quality as well as preserving natural and water resources by promoting nature-based solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation.
“At DEWA, we are working to promote a responsible and sustainable lifestyle, encourage the use of digital channels and green mobility, and raise the efficiency of electricity and water consumption. DEWA supports the national efforts and goals to preserve natural resources, including the goal set by the wise leadership to plant 100 million mangroves by 2030 and to enhance the sustainability of these forests. Mangroves play a fundamental role in protecting the coasts of the UAE and are natural habitats for biodiversity,” the CEO added.
