Rome, Italy: Chiara Consonni of UAE Team ADQ won the Giro d’Italia Women’s second stage following a demanding 110-kilometer race from Sirmione to Volta Mantovana.
Consonni beat world champion Lotte Kopecky of Team SD Worx –Protime with a strong sprint to the finish line. Chiara is the leader in the Points Classification and wears the red jersey as well.
Following her victory, Consonni said that, “I am very happy with this victory. I knew it could be the right day for me, but there were many other strong riders here and it’s never easy to win. But today my teammates did a fantastic job for me. I got on Lotte Kopecky’s wheel in the finale, waited for her to launch the sprint and then took off and caught up. I knew I was OK; I had a good feeling and I’m happy that I managed to win again here at the Giro.”
Today, the third stage of the Giro d’ Italia commences; a 113 km race from Sabbioneta to Toano, with the first uphill finish.
At the Giro d’Italia, UAE Team ADQ is represented by a lineup of seven riders: Alena Amialiusik, Chiara Consonni, Eleonora Gasparrini, Lizzie Holden, Erica Magnaldi, Silvia Persico, and Dominika Wlodarczyk. The team is guided by Sports Directors Cherie Pridham, Alejandro Gonzalez-Tablas, and Aida Nuño.
