Klaipėda (A Lithuania City): Team Abu Dhabi’s Rashed Al Qemzi lost his lead in the 2024 UIM F2 World Championship but remains in contention for a record fifth driver’s title as Sweden’s Mathilda Wiberg claimed victory at the Grand Prix of Lithuania.
Al Qemzi finished fourth in Klaipėda, leaving him two points behind Lithuania’s Edgaras Riabko, who took third place in the race. With three rounds remaining in Italy and Portugal, two of Al Qemzi’s favored venues, the Emirati driver is well-positioned to defend his F2 world title despite a challenging qualifying session.
Wiberg’s win came after a series of setbacks for her competitors. Britain’s Matthew Palfreyman, who led from pole position, was forced out after his timing belt snapped, and Finland’s Jarno Vilmunen ran out of fuel two laps from the finish, clearing the path for Wiberg’s first F2 Grand Prix victory.
Team Abu Dhabi now turns its attention to the next round in San Nazzaro, Italy, their European training base, with hopes of reclaiming the championship lead. The series will conclude with back-to-back races in Portugal, where Al Qemzi aims to secure his fifth world title.
