Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi has become the world’s first city to classify modular, smart, and reconfigurable vehicles, capable of connecting or separating based on operational needs, as a new standalone category of road transport. Developed by NExT, this unprecedented move signals a major shift in global mobility policy and future-ready transport innovation.
The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), operating under the Department of Municipalities and Transport in Abu Dhabi, announced the historic global milestone during DRIFTx 2025, held within the first-ever Abu Dhabi Autonomous Systems Week led by the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council.
The decision is backed by extensive scientific research, including peer-reviewed studies from leading institutions in New York and Abu Dhabi. It also draws on international awards and successful real-world trials that demonstrate how modular systems can improve road efficiency, boost sustainability, and enhance flexibility in modern urban mobility networks.

These next-generation modular vehicles stand out for their adaptability: units can link or detach depending on passenger numbers or use. This dynamic configuration helps optimize traffic flow, cut congestion, and significantly reduce carbon emissions, offering a highly efficient mobility solution.
To implement this innovation, ITC is collaborating with Emirates Driving Company (EDC), Liftango, and Paradigma Innovation Hub to launch the world’s first pilot deployment of modular multi-unit smart vehicles on Yas Island. This initiative marks a critical step in shaping a new era of intelligent, connected transport systems in the capital.
Beyond transforming daily mobility, the modular platform acts as a bridge toward advanced smart operating systems and remote-control technologies, key elements of ITC’s long-term strategy to expand autonomous vehicle applications across Abu Dhabi.

Dr. Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director General of the Integrated Transport Centre, stated that, “The Integrated Transport Centre continues to reinforce Abu Dhabi’s position as a global hub for innovative mobility technologies through pioneering initiatives that tangibly enhance the transport system’s efficiency and sustainability. The adoption of modular smart vehicles represents a strategic step forward in advancing the Emirate’s vision for a more integrated and intelligent mobility ecosystem.”
Antonio Guadagnino, CIO of NexT, said that, “We are thrilled to contribute with NExT to a concrete and immediately deployable solution that requires no new infrastructure to drastically reduce traffic congestion and enhance first and last mile services, two critical needs that we strongly believe will define mobility across Gulf countries for the next decade.”
This milestone firmly strengthens Abu Dhabi’s global leadership in smart mobility, underscoring its commitment to pioneering innovation, future transport solutions, and sustainable mobility systems through bold visions and strategic partnerships.
