Abu Dhabi: The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) has made an exciting announcement regarding the accreditation of three prestigious medical institutions in the emirate. Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC), and Tawam Hospital, all part of the PureHealth Group, have been granted accreditation by the Royal College Canada International (RCI). This significant achievement makes them the first educational institution for medical training to receive such recognition in the UAE.
As a result of this accreditation, the three renowned medical facilities will now be able to offer residency and fellowship programs in accredited medical specialities from Canada. Physicians seeking to obtain the Canadian board can pursue these programs in Abu Dhabi or from anywhere around the world.
The RCI accreditation underscores the commitment of these facilities to uphold the highest international standards in medical education. It recognizes its ability to provide the best medical training available, ensuring that health professionals gain the necessary expertise and competencies to deliver exceptional healthcare services in Abu Dhabi.
The DoH has expressed its satisfaction with the rigorous evaluation mechanism employed by the RCI, which the facilities successfully passed. This accreditation demonstrates their capability to meet the highest standards in medical education, including the quality of training programs, utilization of modern technology and e-learning tools, and the overall output of these programs.
In 2022 alone, the three facilities accommodated over 465 doctors in residency and fellowship specialties. These aspiring physicians sought to acquire the essential training offered by these institutions to advance their careers and specialize in various medical fields approved by the Department of Health. The DoH has also made significant strides in expanding specialized programs in human medicine, providing more than 47 such programs in 2022 compared to 32 in 2021. This increase reflects the growing number of healthcare facilities accredited as educational institutions, totalling eight in Abu Dhabi.

Dr. Noura Al Ghaithi, Under-Secretary of DoH, stated that, “With the accreditation of Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City and Tawam Hospital, we are witnessing a new milestone that is added to Abu Dhabi’s healthcare sector’s long list of achievements, which further cements its position as one of the region’s most advanced and distinguished healthcare systems in the region. This comes as a reflection of our continuous efforts and investments in our healthcare workforce, which has proven to be a beneficial investment, due to its impact on the health and well-being of our community, which will advance the emirate’s healthcare sector and ensure its sustainability.”
The accreditation of these esteemed medical institutions by the RCI not only elevates their status but also solidifies Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading global destination for healthcare. As the emirate continues to attract medical professionals from around the world, this recognition will undoubtedly enhance its reputation for providing exceptional healthcare services.
With this accreditation, Abu Dhabi is poised to offer physicians an outstanding platform for medical training and career advancement, bolstered by the integration of international standards and cutting-edge educational practices.
