Abu Dhabi: Mohamed Bin Zayed University for Humanities (MBZUH), in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority, has introduced a master’s program in Emirati folk literature, marking the first specialized graduate degree of its kind in the region.
The initiative has been aimed at fostering scholarly research into the UAE’s rich folk traditions using modern academic frameworks and methodologies.
The collaboration was formalized at a signing ceremony held at Al Raha Beach Theatre in Abu Dhabi, coinciding with the third episode of the Million’s Poet program. Present were Major General Faris Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority, and Dr Mohammed Rashid Al Hamli, Chairman of MBZUH’s Board of Trustees.
The agreement was signed by Abdullah Mubarak Al Muhairi, Acting Director General of the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority, and Dr Khalifa Mubarak Al Dhaheri, Chancellor of MBZUH, in the presence of officials, writers, poets, and scholars with interest in Emirati folk literature.
The program has been structured to provide a comprehensive examination of Emirati folk literature, covering its sources, genres, notable figures, defining traits, and evolution. Students will undertake comparative analyses with regional and international folk traditions while contextualizing Emirati texts within their historical, social, and cultural settings.

Graduates are expected to gain expertise in identifying and analyzing diverse folk literature sources and applying advanced research methods. They will also be trained in using digital tools for documentation, scholarly authentication, and analysis of oral and written texts.
Abdullah Mubarak Al Muhairi noted that the program is part of ongoing cooperation to preserve the UAE’s cultural heritage and enhance its academic and community impact. He emphasized that documenting and studying Emirati folk literature is vital for safeguarding the nation’s collective memory and cultural identity.
Dr Khalifa Mubarak Al Dhaheri noted that, “This partnership with the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority exemplifies institutional integration aligned with the UAE’s recently launched National Identity Strategy. Through distinctive academic programs, we ensure that Emirati heritage maintains a prominent position in research and education.”
The master’s program reflects the UAE’s commitment to strengthening national identity and ensuring the continuity of its cultural heritage through academic excellence. The master’s program is expected to cultivate a new generation of researchers, educators, and cultural practitioners who will contribute to the preservation, documentation, and promotion of Emirati folk literature.
By combining academic rigor with practical research tools, the initiative ensures that Emirati heritage continues to thrive within educational, cultural, and community spheres for future generations.
