Dubai: Ethan Guo, a 19-year-old solo pilot, is not just chasing a world record; he’s on a mission to make a global impact. Ethan embarked on a solo journey across seven continents, piloting a small aircraft to raise funds and awareness for childhood cancer. His journey, which began in Geneva, Switzerland, is slated to cover 80,000 kilometers and 60 countries within 150 days.
Ethan’s endeavor is more than just a test of skill and endurance. It is deeply personal and driven by a passion to support young cancer patients, whom he fondly refers to as ‘Big C warriors.’ As he nears Dubai, his next stop after Doha, Qatar, he is on the brink of becoming the youngest person to achieve such a feat in a small aircraft.
Global Mission
Before arriving in each destination, Ethan takes time to visit hospitals, meet young patients, and share his message of hope. His goal is to raise $1 million to support childhood cancer research and treatment. His journey has been marked by inspiring interactions with people from diverse cultures, all united by a common desire to make the world a better place.
“I wish no child had to endure cancer. This journey has taught me that kindness and goodwill are universal. Every person I meet wants to contribute to a better future. Together, we can achieve incredible things,” Ethan reflects, his words imbued with optimism.
Currently, Ethan is in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he has been touched by the hospitality and generosity of the people. He eagerly anticipates his upcoming visit to Dubai on the 19th, expressing his excitement about experiencing the warmth of the UAE.
An Epic Journey
Ethan’s journey began in Geneva, where he meticulously planned his route to include stops in countries like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, India, and Japan. Flying a modified Cessna 182, equipped with an additional fuel tank in place of rear seats, he has prepared for long-haul flights, including a challenging 15-hour leg from Japan to Alaska.
Ethan’s safety is a top priority, as he maintains a satellite connection with his ground team and has equipped his aircraft with multiple emergency locator transmitters. His longest flight to date was an eight-hour journey from Canada to Greenland, but the upcoming flight across the North Pacific to Alaska will push his limits even further.
Mission Born from Experience
Ethan’s passion for aviation ignited at the age of 13, leading him to earn his private pilot license by 17. With over 700 flight hours under his belt, his mission was inspired by a personal tragedy—a close relative’s battle with cancer. This experience fueled his determination to use his love for flying to make a difference.
“When my cousin was diagnosed with blood cancer at 18, it deeply affected me. I knew I wanted to do something significant to help others facing similar battles. After years of planning and convincing my family, especially my hesitant mother, I set out on this journey. My father has been a pillar of support, and I hope that by completing this mission, I not only set a world record but also bring much-needed attention to the fight against childhood cancer,” Ethan shares.
Ethan Guo’s journey is more than just a record-breaking attempt; it is a heartfelt mission to support a cause close to his heart, and he hopes to inspire others to join him in the fight against childhood cancer.
